1. Material characteristics
Optical performance: fused silica has very few chemical impurities, very high purity (the total metal impurity content can be less than 0.0001%), excellent light transmittance, and can even read newspapers through materials 100 meters thick. Its low thermal expansion coefficient (about 5.8 × 10 ⁻⁷/℃) and high thermal shock stability enable it to maintain structural stability even under drastic temperature changes.
Light guiding mechanism: through the design of hollow anti resonant fiber (HC-ARF), fused silica can achieve low loss laser transmission in the mid infrared band (>3 µ m), and the core diameter is usually 100-120 µ m to balance the transmission efficiency and bending loss.
2. Application scenarios
Laser transmission: used for flexible transmission of high-power lasers (such as 1 µ m and 2 µ m bands), such as achieving 121W continuous laser or 140kW peak power nanosecond pulse transmission in the near-infrared band.
Industrial testing: As a light guiding material used for temperature detection of molten iron, it should be noted that crystal lattice may occur above 900 ℃, and materials such as light blue gemstones should be used to enhance high-temperature stability.
Aerospace and scientific research: The laser launcher used in the Apollo moon landing program can still accurately measure the distance between the Earth and the Moon; Also involved in precision scientific experiments such as gravitational wave detection.
3. Processing technology
Natural quartz sand needs to be melted by an electric furnace at 1760 ℃ or above, rapidly cooled to form an amorphous structure, and subsequently processed into crucible, window, rod and other forms.
Precautions
Cleaning and maintenance: Use a soft cleaning cloth and specialized cleaning agent to clean and avoid scratching the surface.
Storage environment: Store in a dry, well ventilated environment to prevent moisture and mold.
Usage: During use, avoid severe vibration and collision to avoid affecting its optical performance.
